Understanding CNC-Milling Through Wooden Railways

During my 5-month exchange at HSLU (Hochschule Luzern) Design und Kunst, I explored the integration of 3D CAD modelling with industrial machines like the Morbidelli CNC milling machine. For a project reimagining classic children's toy train tracks, I designed “Fly-by” — a creative railroad crossing where one train elevates to an upper level while another passes underneath, showcasing precision wood working and layered design thinking.

The initial designs of Fly-by were very rudimentary and utilitarian with not a lot of emphasis on the aesthetic value of the piece but rather the function. Through various iterations, I decided to go with the current design that employs circles and straightlines for a balanced design that fits in with already commercialised Briobahn sets. That way, this piece would not look out of place in any existing Briobahn setting. It requires minimal participation (just the twist of an axis) and fits on top of any 3 normal straight pieces of track making it seamless and effortless.
